Rolls-Royce Phantom EE, electric luxury

Rolls-Royce Phantom EE, electric luxuryOne of the main novelties of the Geneva Motor Show is in my opinion the Rolls-Royce Phantom 102EX , also called Phantom Experimental Electric, or simply Phantom EE. This is a version 100% electric flagship of the legendary British manufacturer, in the words of the CEO, is a great challenge. Why should meet the expectations of the type of client Rolls-Royce Phantom, very demanding and conservative lover of a well should not tarnish super luxury, but to improve electric propulsion.

It is an experimental vehicle and test drive will be offered several clients, media and VIP , after which conclusions will be drawn interesting for eventual mass production . The Phantom EE attempt to resolve uncertainties that arise on autonomy, reliability and usability in the real world , issues that should be answered by the end of 2011. They know what we can offer one of the world’s most luxurious vehicles when the engine stops V12 and transferred to the electrons.

Apparently, nothing changes on the outside, but if we are observant we recreate the spectacular Atlantic Chrome paint. Another indication that we are not facing a conventional Phantom is that the “Spirit of Ecstasy” is not metal , but makrolon and is backlit in blue. In the cabin there is a green twist, replacing the wood with aluminum inserts and adding a new vegetable dye leather. The instrumentation is reviewed and added a charge indicator on the center console.

But most important is under the body. The Phantom EE has two electric motors of 145 kW of power, one for each axis. The combined power with permanent four wheel drive is 394 hp and is accompanied by 800 Nm of torque , figures similar to the engine V12 atmosphere. For the added weight, the Phantom EE accelerates from 0 to 100 km / h in around 8 seconds (less than 6 in version V12 ) and top speed is limited to 160 km / h. It only has one forward gear, like the other electric.

The engine power is extracted from it is believed the largest ever battery rack installed in a passenger vehicle. With joint capacity 71 kWh – almost four times more than a Renault Fluence ZE – has divided its energy storage in five packs of 38 cells, 36 cells, 10 cells, 8 cells and 4 cells. The key is under the hood. Its internal construction is called NCM , and are composed of a mixture of lithium, nickel, cobalt and manganese.

Allow about 200 km of electric range and require 20 hours of loading in a 220-volt outlet or 8 hours if you connect to a network phase. As a new Rolls-Royce has developed a system of magnetic induction wireless charging through panels to be installed on the floor of the garage (previously connected to a wall control unit), transmitting the current to the batteries with 90% efficiency without any cables and comfort.

Of course, the cable always offered “whole life”. His production as we mentioned, is not yet certain, but the project promises to one type of client will receive a few kilometers and a similar experience to that of motor silky V12.
